The AWA was founded in 1963 as the South County Art Association: amoung the founding members were Rob Sadler, Barbara Armstrong, Ollie Baker, Ruth Cedarberg, Muriel Moschner and William Wuerz. The first election was held in January of that year with the first art show held only four months later in May. The group's shows grew over the next few years and so did the membership - to over 300 within a short time. The name of the organization was changed to Art World Association in the year 2000 when it was ackowledged that its members came from all over the St Louis Metropolitan area as well as Illinois. AWA is a non-profit organization that is open to all interested in the visual arts, who are eighteen years of age or older. Exhibitions are held in st Louis city & county. The Gallery committee schedules exhibitions in business galleries, retirement centers, malls and private galleries. A monthly newsletter is provided to the membership that gives information on show opportunities, including all membership shows, as well as art opportunities outside the AWA. In October the AWA enters the Annual October Fall Art Show and Sale at the Harlin Museum in West Plains, MO.
