Juror's Statement: What a beautiful show. Seeing the art and reading the commentary was quite emotional. Such a wonderful tribute to those who are still alive and have shaped our lives, and an amazing memorial to those who are not with us anymore. Judging was quite difficult in that I did not want to inhibit any of your great memories. I was looking for both great art and a great message that worked together to create something special. Thank you all for sharing these pieces of your lives. ~ Sherry Salant.
About the Juror:
Sherry Salant grew up in Chesterfield, Missouri. Her grandfather was an artist and her father was an art collector. While other kids were spending the weekends playing tetherball and Four- Square, Sherry was either on a road trip to see New York City galleries, or at the Saint Louis Art Museum where her mother was a docent. Her family's deep roots in the arts gave Sherry an innate appreciation of tone, light, color, texture, and style. One of her most monumental memories was when Sherry and her sister spent the weekend with Thomas Hart Benton and his wife in their Kansas City home in 1968. Over the years, Sherry has learned to appreciate more avant garde work with Salvador Dali, Alexander Calder, and color with August Renoir. Her love for black and white photography and landscapes comes from her favorite photographer, Ansel Adams.
Sherry found her true calling in the mediums of photography and alcohol ink. Her alcohol ink paintings are organic in nature. The paint flows naturally over the nonporous surfaces as Sherry works the angles of the hardboard into different directions. It is only after moving the paint that Sherry sees how the ink flows and envisions the final creation.
Sherry Salant is an English and journalism teacher, author, and professional photographer. She has been a resident artist at Framations since 2013 and is the owner of H-art and Soul Art Gallery in Chesterfield, MO.
